Pigs can be made from various materials but the most common are foam, urethane, nitrile, silicone, or various rubbers. In the process industry, the most common material is FDA-approved urethane and silicone.<\/p>\n

Pigs are propelled by the existing pumps within the processing system and the contents of the line. The seals or edges of the pig scrape the pipe wall and remove debris, scale, rust, corrosion, and the like. Pigs will generally be 1% to 5% larger than the i.d. of the pipe. Pigs will also come in different shore hardnesses to address different scenarios within the pipe, usually 60 to 75 durometer.<\/p>\n
